As a massage therapist, my hands are pretty important and enjoy any extra attention they can get. So, when I was asked if I wanted to try a hand massager, my reply was and emphatic “Yes!”.
I remember hearing about “Blackberry Thumbs” in back before the rise of smartphones. This new phenomenon was on the rise because of the overuse of people typing on their Blackberries. Since then, we have seen the exponential rise of smartphone usage and the potential for repetitive strain injuries like has only increased.
Nowadays, it’s not just our thumbs that are at risk. With the constant use of touch screens and smaller keyboards on our phones, our entire hands and wrists can become strained from typing and scrolling. As a massage therapist, I have seen firsthand the impact that excessive smartphone and electronic usage can have on my clients’ hands and arms. The number of client’s with hand and wrist problems has risen as technology has become more prevalent in our daily lives.
Hand and wrist problems are an all to common problem for people of all ages. Between keyboards, smartphones, tablets, and gaming – our hands rarely have a break. Add it other hobbies that use the repetitive hand movements, like sewing, knitting, writing, or playing an instrument, and it’s no wonder our hands and wrists can start to ache – even if you are not a massage therapist!
A Real Pain in the Hand
Here are a few hand issues you, a friend or family member may have:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A common condition that arises from the compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist. This often leads to symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and arm.
- Tendonitis: This is an inflammation of the tendons in the hand, which can cause pain and stiffness. It is commonly caused by overuse or repetitive motions.
- De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: A condition that affects the thumb tendons and causes aching, swelling, and difficulty moving the thumb. It is commonly seen in individuals who perform repetitive thumb motions, such as texting or gaming – AKA – Blackberry thumbs
- Trigger Finger: This condition causes the fingers to lock or catch when bent and can be accompanied by pain and stiffness. It is caused by inflammation of the sheath that surrounds the tendons in the finger.
- Arthritis: There are many forms of arthritis that can affect the hands, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These conditions can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in the hands and fingers.
- Reynaud’s Disease: This condition causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the hands, leading to numbness, tingling, and color changes in the fingers. It is commonly triggered by cold temperatures or stress.
- Dupuytren’s Contracture: This condition causes the fingers to bend towards the palm and can make it difficult to straighten them. It is caused by thickening of the tissue under the skin in the palm.
But the good news is that massage can help alleviate these issues. And while going to a massage therapist is certainly a great option for managing many of theses conditions, there is another option for you to use at home, whenever and where ever you like!
Let’s explore the benefits of using a hand massager and introduce the Cupilo cordless hand massager, a portable and convenient option for anyone looking to pamper their hands.
Cordless & Portable Hand Massager
Cupilo is cordless hand massager and can be used anywhere – at home, in the office, or while traveling. With its rechargeable battery, you can enjoy a relaxing massage anytime and anywhere. This may be at your computer, on your couch, or in bed. I just reviewed their massage mat that I am laying on right now in my last review here.
Compression Massage
Regular use of a hand massager can improve blood circulation and promote overall hand health. By stimulating blood flow, nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the hands more efficiently, reducing inflammation and promoting healing. The Cupilo uses compression, or gentle squeezing to massage the hands. There are no rollers or pressure points to knead the hand, which is one thing I would have liked, but understand is not for everyone. It is more like a hug for your hand, followed by a release in pressure. This repeats until the unit timer shuts off.
The most common complaint I saw on the reviews, was the lack of rollers or massaging, like I mentioned above. The compressions can be quite strong on the highest level. There is a red release button on the side to quickly release pressure if it becomes too much.
Heat to Soothe Aches and Pain
Weather you have problems with cold hands and feet, or you suffer from chronic pain, the Cupilo includes heat to warm and soften stiff or cold hands.
Customize Your Massage
You can customize your hand massage by choosing three different levels of pressure or heat. I love lots of pressure and heat, so I am always at a 3 for both.
